J. Alex Thompson, DNP, MEd, RN, CNE, CHSE is an assistant professor of nursing at Carthage.
A first-generation student and native of Arkansas, Professor Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree from Hendrix College with a double major in history and gender studies, and a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Arkansas. He worked in residential life and student affairs at Ohio University and Union College before returning to school to become a registered nurse.
Prof. Thompson’s nursing practice includes experience in adult medical-surgical, emergency, and critical care, as well as adult and adolescent mental health. He has also held positions in clinical staff development where he developed continuing education programs and instructed practitioners in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Since 2014, he’s been teaching pre-licensure nursing students in both undergraduate and graduate programs at Des Moines Area Community College in Des Moines, Iowa, and Marquette University in Milwaukee.
His research interests include the use of simulation to promote culturally appropriate holistic care, ethical development, and the professional identity of nurses.
Prof. Thompson holds a master’s in Nursing Administration from Indiana State University, a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and national credentials as a Certified Nurse Educator and a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. He is a member of the International Nursing Association for Simulation and Clinical Learning (INACSL), Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), and GLMA — Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality.
